Post-war Rome is the setting for this lyrical and heartbreaking character study of bitterness, loneliness and reconciliation in the months following Italy’s liberation by the Allies. On a rainy night in the heart of the city, a cat burglar (Nando Bruno of ROME, OPEN CITY) inadvertently saves the life of a would-be suicide (BLACK SUNDAY’s Andrea Checchi), despondent over having been betrayed by his fiancée while fighting in the war. Joining the avuncular thief for a night of misadventure, the young man intervenes in the arrest of an impoverished typist (Valentina Cortese, of Fellini’s JULIET OF THE SPIRITS) who has turned to prostitution to pay for her boardinghouse room. Ducking out of the rain into a coffee bar, the strangers share hard luck stories over cognac and encounter a distinguished amnesiac (THE BICYCLE THIEF writer-director Vittorio De Sica), begging to be told who he is. When the new friends find themselves invited to an illegal private casino, old lovers are reunited, old grudges are revived and first love is given a second chance.

Made during the seminal years of Italian neorealism, ROMA CITTÀ LIBERA (ROME FREE CITY) was directed by Marcello Pagliero, famous for having played the stoic resistance leader tortured to death by the Nazis in Roberto Rossellini’s incendiary ROME, OPEN CITY, and shot on location by Aldo Tonti, who would bring the same mixture of street-level grittiness and breathless magic to Federico Fellini’s NIGHTS OF CABIRIA a decade later. Scripting the film was a who’s who of up-and-coming giants of Italian cinema’s golden age, including Ennio Flaiano (La Dolce Vita, 8½), Suso Checchi D’Amico (THE LEOPARD, ROCCO AND HIS BROTHERS) and Cesare Zavattini (BICYCLE THIEVES, MIRACLE IN MILAN).

Completely restored from the original 35mm vault negative, ROMA CITTÀ LIBERA is only now available uncut and for the first time on DVD.

RICHARD DIAMOND - PRIVATE EYE

David Janssen stars as the title character in “Richard Diamond - Private Eye,” the acclaimed mystery series from the 1950s that would set the standard for many of the TV detectives that were to follow. The series was created by movie star Dick Powell, the Hollywood song-and-dance man who turned to film noir, and who both produced and starred in the original radio drama. Deciding he was too busy (and maybe too old) to play Diamond in the TV version, Powell cast an up-and-coming actor named David Meyer for the lead role. At Powell’s suggestion, Meyer changed his name to Janssen. The ex-cop turned private detective Richard Diamond took on the tough cases, occasionally aided by his pal still on the force, Lt. Dennis “Mac” McGough (Regis Toomey).

Two seasons later, Diamond would move to Los Angeles and get a glamorous girlfriend and a leggy receptionist. But here for the first time on DVD are two episodes from the gritty first season with Diamond walking the mean streets of New York. In the 1960s, Janssen would star the phenomenal television series “The Fugitive” and in the 1970s he would also return to the TV detective drama in the well-received “Harry O.”

While vacationing in the mountains, Diamond helps a woman being chased by criminals who think that she took some incriminating photos.

Gina Prince-Bythewood, a former college athlete, puts a spin on this one-on-one tale of Love and Basketball. Sanaa Lathan (The Best Man) is the fiercely driven, hot-tempered Monica, a tomboy who gives her all for basketball. Omar Epps (The Mod Squad) is Quincy, an NBA player’s son who has pro dreams of his own. While Quincy plays college ball on huge courts to cheering, sold-out crowds, we see Monica’s sweat, tears, and sheer physical dedication in front of tiny audiences in small gyms and second-rate auditoriums.

The story is pointedly set in the late 1980s, years before the establishment of the WNBA, so Monica’s prospects for pro ball lie exclusively in Europe, while Quincy steps into the pros at home. It’s a pleasure to see a character as passionate and fully developed as Monica, and Lathan gives a fiery portrayal (she had never played ball before the film, but you’d never tell from her performance). Prince-Bythewood favors her struggle over Quincy’s and opens our eyes to her unique challenges with a sharp, savvy contrast. Alfre Woodard costars as Monica’s harping mom (always trying to get her to be more ladylike) and Dennis Haysbert is Quincy’s philandering father. Hoops fan Spike Lee produced. –Sean Axmaker
